Thomians Triumph in 64th Annual Cricket Encounter

The official website of the Mother OBA witnessed a momentous occasion on June 7th, 2024, as it launched on the same day as the 64th Annual Cricket Encounter between St. Thomas’ College and Government Science College (GSC). In a thrilling display of cricketing prowess, the Thomians emerged victorious, defeating their arch-rivals by a commanding 164 runs.

Match Summary:

After losing the toss, the Thomians were put in to bat first. Despite the initial setback, they put up a formidable total of 264 runs, all out, off 47.5 overs. Lovindu Wickramasinghe led the charge with an unbeaten 99 runs, supported by notable contributions from Nipun Liyanage (31), Sahas Abroow (26), Thenuka Hearath (23), Anuradha Ranasinghe (19), and Nethsara Kodithueakku (17). The GSC bowlers faced a tough challenge, with Eranga Bandara (3/28), M. Dewnaka (3/48), and Ashen Daramarathe (2/53) leading the attack.

In response, Government Science College struggled to counter the Thomian bowling attack, eventually being all out for 99 runs off 42.4 overs. Nipun Liyanage showcased his bowling prowess, capturing 3 wickets for 13 runs, supported by Yohan Kumara with 2 wickets for 22 runs. Achintha Karunarathne was the highest scorer for GSC with 26 runs.

Individual Awards:

  • Best Batsman: Lovindu Wickramasinghe
  • Best Bowler: Nipun Liyanage
  • Emerging Player: Achinthaka Weerasinghe
  • Man of the Match: Lovindu Wickramasinghe

The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Krishan Anandakumara, former 1st XI Captain and Chief Selector for NCPCA, who served as the Chief Guest alongside the two Principals. The Player Conduct Team (PCT), led by SLC Premier Match Referee and former 1st XI Cricket Captain, Mr. Ravi Punchihewa, along with Ms. L. Kadawthagedara and A. Bandara, rendered their services in honorary capacities.

It was a day filled with cricketing excellence and camaraderie, highlighting the rich tradition of sportsmanship and competition upheld by both institutions.
